  16:30 Anosognosia or not? A patient´s perspective

Live-presentation of a patient with braindamage will introduce the summerschool with Professor George Prigatano. The neuropsychologist knows this patient for many years. His 2 hrs presentation will start with an interview of the patient in English language highlighting the biography including the personal history of childhood, school, family life, adolescence and vocational career until the braindamage interrupted this ´normal life´. In a second part of this interview the patient will describe initial deficits after suffering brain damage and his rehabilitaton efforts in different hospitals and later on in occupational, linguistic, neuropsychological and psychotherapeutic outpatient settings. This retrospective interview will be summarized by the neuropsychologist in a few powerpoint slides, in order to contrast the subjective report of the patient.

Participants of the summer school will continue this interview of the patient focusing on his/her perspective for the future. Together with the patient we will finally discuss how his/her subjective views presented in these interviews indicate anosognosia and whether this denial of illness or neglect for deficits is adaptive in the future. Suggestions for the ongoing and future neuropsychological and psychotherapeutic treatment will be made together with the patient as a final step.

09:00 Understanding and treating disturbances in higher integrative brain functions
This workshop will address two practical questions: Is restoration of disturbed higher integrative brain functions possible, and if so, un-der what conditions and to what extent? What can be done to help patients adjust to and/or compensate for any residuals of these disturbances that substantially interfere with their lives? Recent and historical observations which have direct clinical application will be reviewed. Participants will be encouraged to present difficult cases to see how these observations may be relevant to their work.
